ATM: Conceptual Understanding
Conceptual understanding and deep and transferable learning are the foundation of teaching and learning in the Foothills School Division (FSD). Conceptual understanding involves a student’s ability to grasp the underlying principles and relationships within a subject, rather than merely memorizing and repeating facts. Through this students can transform information into usable knowledge through seeing patterns and making connections. This deep understanding is crucial for developing expertise, as it allows individuals to apply their knowledge flexibly and creatively in different situations, which is the essence of learning for transfer.
In addition to helping students form conceptual understandings, FSD employs the principles of deep and transferable learning by allowing students to be agents of their own learning and to have the skills to address complex problems over time. Students are engaged in real-world issues that guides them to understand the relevance of their students and employ the strategies of sustained inquiry and problem-solving. Learning is integrated across multiple subjects to show how complex problems often span different areas of knowledge. Student agency is exhibited when students have choice in how they demonstrate their learning, have the opportunity to reflect on their progress, and, with the guidance of their teacher, determine the next step to advance their understanding . In short, student agency is about promoting critical thinking, curiosity, experimentation, and active learning within the framework of the Alberta program of studies.
Conceptual understanding and learning for transfer are essential for meaningful teaching and learning in the Foothills School Division. By implementing these practices, FSD promotes that students not only gain a deep understanding of the material but also develop the ability to transfer their knowledge to new and diverse contexts. This approach prepares students for lifelong learning and problem-solving, equipping them with the skills needed to navigate our complex and dynamic world both now and in the future. Conceptual understanding is fostering the conditions that support the success of tomorrow’s leaders.
Yours in learning,
