Statement from Foothills School Division Regarding Contract Negotiations with the FSD Bus Drivers Association
November 22, 2024
The Foothills School Division (FSD) is currently engaged in contract bargaining with the FSD Bus Drivers Association (FSDBDA). These discussions are being conducted with the utmost respect for the valuable contribution our bus drivers make to the safety and well-being of our students.
It is important to note that the negotiations are subject to directives set forth by the Provincial Bargaining and Compensation Office (PBCO), a provincial body set to guide and regulate the terms of public sector agreements to ensure standardized wages across Alberta. Current compensation, and associated cost-of-living increases are within the parameters set out by the Province. FSD agrees that funding received for education does not reflect the cost of inflation that greatly impacts transportation services (fuel, insurance, parts, and carbon tax), which is reflected in the past few years’ operating deficits.
In our commitment to providing a fair and comprehensive compensation package, we wish to highlight that the total compensation for our bus drivers also includes participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) and board-paid Extended Health Benefits. These benefits are designed to support the long-term health and security of our valued employees.
Bus Drivers are often the first ‘hello’ and last ‘goodbye’ of many students’ school day. We are grateful for their collective commitment to safety and for making a positive impact each day. Foothills School Division is committed to reaching an agreement that recognizes their essential role within our division while adhering to the regulatory and budgetary frameworks in place.
