What To Expect When A Student Misses A Class?
Please phone or email (indicated above) the school if your child is going to be absent, late, or is leaving school early. These notifications are monitored and added to the student file throughout the school day.
Please advise your child to check in at the office when they arrive late/leave early so their attendance can be timestamped (this is necessary for security reasons).
If notification is NOT received from a parent or guardian, the absence is considered UNEXCUSED. This will action an automated phone/email message to the primary contact on file, the afternoon of that absence, indicating the class(es) that were missed.
When a student is late for class, we encourage them to speak to their teacher to ensure that they are marked “Late” rather than “Absent” (LATE attendance does NOT action a phone call).
Notifications are sent via School Messenger, automated phone/email message system. This information is compiled from our attendance records (teacher populated) and notifications from parent/guardian input.
NOTE: An 18 year old student still needs to be excused by a parent or guardian.
Protocols for Confirming Absences
For Students
- Please stop at the office to let us know when you are leaving or if you are returning to school
- Please have your parent or guardian contact us to confirm your absence
- If you are late, please discuss your attendance with your teacher at the END of class to ensure that your attendance is marked late, not absent – when you check in/out at the office, we only check you in/out of school…your teacher checks you in/out of class.
For Parents
- Please contact the office (phone/email) to confirm your child’s absence, as well as letting us know how long they will be away.
- The purpose of calling/emailing to excuse your child from school is for us to confirm that you are aware of the absence.
- Only teachers know if your student was in the classroom. If you receive a call/email stating your child was absent, please direct any discrepancies to the appropriate teacher via email.
The Office
We keep track of a student’s attendance electronically, via Edsembli.
We record:
- The timestamp for when a student leaves/returns from the school, and
- Parental/guardian confirmation of a student’s absence
School Messenger is populated with the information we receive from parents/guardians and the attendance teachers take at the beginning of each class. The information gathered by the office determines who receives an UNEXCUSED absence phone call/email in the afternoon.
