Principal at C. Ian McLaren School announces June 2026 retirement
I have truly enjoyed each of my teaching and leadership roles over the course of my career, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished together in support of students, staff, and families.
The Foothills School Division is honoured to announce the forthcoming retirement of Ms. Stacey Swanson, Principal at C. Ian McLaren School, effective June 30, 2026. This milestone signifies twenty-seven years of exemplary service in public education, characterized by distinguished teaching and leadership contributions across school authorities in both British Columbia and Alberta.
Ms. Swanson has had a distinguished career with the Foothills School Division, making a positive contribution to students, families, and staff across four division schools. She began her tenure in 1997 at Turner Valley School as a Grade 4, K-6 Gym teacher and Learning Support teacher. In 2006, she transitioned to École Percy Pegler School, assuming responsibilities as both a Learning Coach and Teacher.
In 2012, Ms. Swanson was appointed vice-principal and had the opportunity to be part of the inaugural administrative team at the newly opened Westmount School in Okotoks. Finally, in 2019, Stacey was appointed Principal of C. Ian McLaren School where her leadership expertise, positivity, and compassion have contributed to student success and wellbeing over the past seven years.
Ms. Swanson is an accomplished school leader who holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria and a Master of Education from the University of Calgary. She is certified in American Sign Language and possesses the Leadership Quality Standards (LQS) credential required for principals in Alberta.
Stacey is widely regarded within her school as a dedicated and student-centered leader, committed to the belief that every child has the potential to succeed. When Ms. Swanson interacts with students at C. Ian McLaren, she demonstrates genuine respect for each learner’s unique abilities, learning styles, and strengths, offering compassionate guidance throughout their educational journey. Her approach fosters mutual respect not only with students but also among staff and the broader school community. As an instructional leader, Stacey has articulated a clear vision, coordinated essential support systems, and enabled all members of the school to effectively contribute to student success.
As she prepares for her June retirement Stacey shares the following: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as Principal of C. Ian McLaren School for the past seven years. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities for learning and growth I have experienced throughout my time with Foothills School Division. I have truly enjoyed each of my teaching and leadership roles over the course of my career, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished together in support of students, staff, and families. While I am excited about the next chapter, I know I will miss the daily connections, the shared purpose, and the incredible community that has made my time here so meaningful.”
Superintendent Chis Fuzessy provides his reflection, “On behalf of the entire community, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Stacey Swanson for her dedication, steadfast leadership, and commitment to public education over the past twenty-seven years. Ms. Swanson’s passion for nurturing student growth has left a mark, inspiring both colleagues and learners. We thank Ms. Swanson for her outstanding service, and we wish her all the best as she embarks on her well-deserved retirement.”
