Drama
Red Deer Lake is very fortunate to have a comprehensive and dynamic junior high drama program that provides students with the opportunity to explore the performing arts in a supportive and creative environment. The program is designed to engage students in all aspects of theater, including acting, singing, stage production, and technical support, helping them develop a wide range of skills that go beyond the stage.
One of the highlights of the drama program is the annual drama performance, which showcases the incredible talent and hard work of students. This full-scale production allows students to take on roles as actors, singers, and behind-the-scenes crew members, giving them a well-rounded theater experience. Students involved in the performance learn the importance of dedication, teamwork, and perseverance as they rehearse lines, perfect their musical numbers, and contribute to the overall production. The annual drama performance is a much-anticipated event in the school community, drawing support from families, teachers, and fellow students who come to watch and celebrate the performers.
Beyond the annual production, Red Deer Lake’s drama students have many opportunities to perform throughout the year. They participate in special events such as the Thanksgiving Assembly and the Terry Fox Run, where they use their theatrical skills to enhance these important school gatherings. Whether through dramatic readings, short skits, or musical performances, students bring energy and emotion to these events, helping to make them more meaningful for the entire school community.
The drama program also encourages students to showcase their talents in a variety of ways beyond traditional performances. Throughout the year, students may be involved in smaller showcases, classroom performances, or creative storytelling activities that allow them to practice their dramatic skills in different formats. These experiences help build confidence and stage presence, teaching students how to express themselves effectively and connect with an audience.
A key component of the drama program is the technical support team, which allows students to gain hands-on experience with lighting, sound, set design, and stage management. These behind-the-scenes roles are essential to the success of any production, and students who take on these responsibilities learn valuable problem-solving and technical skills. By working with props, costumes, and special effects, students gain an appreciation for the collaborative nature of theater and the many elements that come together to create a successful performance.
Participating in drama provides students with more than just theatrical skills—it also helps them develop confidence, creativity, and communication skills that will serve them well in all areas of life. Whether performing on stage or working behind the scenes, students learn how to work as a team, think on their feet, and express themselves with clarity and enthusiasm. These experiences foster personal growth and encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, making drama a valuable part of their junior high experience.
Red Deer Lake’s drama program is a source of pride for the school community, offering students a chance to shine in the performing arts while building lifelong skills and friendships. With an annual production, performances at key school events, and a range of opportunities to engage in theater, the program continues to inspire and empower young performers.
