Principal at Westmount School announces retirement

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming retirement (June 30, 2025) of Ms. Sherry Opas, Principal of Westmount School. Since joining the Foothills School Division (FSD) in August 2014, Ms. Opas has exemplified educational leadership, demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing students' educational needs, supporting excellence among staff, and engaging with the wider school communities she has served.

Ms. Opas began her journey with FSD as a Behaviour Learning Facilitator working across all Divisions schools. In 2018 Ms. Opas was appointed as Vice Principal of Westmount School, where she showcased her deep commitment to fostering an inclusive environment focused on student success. Her leadership at Westmount School has been marked by high expectations for herself, her students, and her team, always striving for excellence in education.

With over 35 years in education, Ms. Opas has held various roles including Teacher, Team Lead, Behaviour Consultant, Vice Principal and Principal. She has served in three Alberta School Divisions: County of Red Deer #23, Christ the Redeemer School Division, and Foothills School Division. Known for her dedication to student success and high standards, Ms. Opas has made a significant impact throughout her career.

Ms. Opas holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and a Masters of Education in School Administration from Gonzaga University. She also possesses the Alberta Education Leadership Quality Standard certification, further highlighting her commitment to educational excellence.

As Ms. Opas begins this new chapter, we acknowledge her years of service and leadership. Her work has influenced many students and educators, and her impact will remain significant.

As she prepares for her June retirement Sherry shares the following, “As I step into retirement, I am grateful for the privilege and opportunity to work alongside the dedicated team of teachers and support staff at Westmount who provide engaging learning, caring support, and countless extra-curricular opportunities for our students. I will deeply miss the daily interactions with all the students, staff, and community.”
