Welcome to Music!
The elementary music program is geared toward exposing the students to age-appropriate theory, learning and understanding rhythm, melody, timbre, musical expression, form, texture and harmony. This is done through various songs, games, instruments, experiences, composition activities and community. When your child actively participates in these experiences in Music, not only is it fun but it also it helps improve his/her spatial/temporal skills, develops stronger literacy and numeracy skills and helps develop a better memory! The elementary music program is also great at developing teamwork through unison singing, coordinated performances (both in and out of the classroom) with pitched and non-pitched instruments, dancing and games. Music encourages hard work and determination, it's also an outlet for creativity and a source of stress relief.
Students in K-2 generally work with non-pitched instruments as it's important for them to learn the foundations of classroom music, rhythm, following directions and working together in keeping a steady beat. Depending on the class, they may get to explore pitched instruments along the way.
Students in grades 3-5 generally work with pitched instruments, really helping to put their knowledge of music theory into action.
The expectations for people in the music room are as follows:
*that we all make good choices
*use kind words
*show respect to peers, adults, ourselves and our shared space
*involve ourselves in class
*care for our room and our instruments
There will be a number of extracurricular opportunities:
Choir - Open to grades 1-5
Drama - Through this club, students will be given opportunities to develop their oral speaking skills, acting skills and singing skills.
Feel free to encourage your child where you think they would have fun!
