ATM: Misinformation, Disinformation, and Malinformation

atm-20250318

In education we learn by sharing data and experiences. In times of uncertainty, an increase of information is often shared to bolster opinions or make sense of the world around us; however, not all information shared is valid or accurate.   There are three main forms of information that may be shared that can cause harm to a situation, an individual, or an organization:

  • Misinformation is when incorrect information is shared, without the intent to harm.
  • Disinformation is when incorrect information with the intent to cause harm.
  • Malinformation is when information has a kernel of truth, but it is exaggerated or skewed to potentially cause harm.

Both during the current strike action and normal operations, cases of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (MDM) are observed throughout the community. While the Division cannot address each claim made on social media, websites, the even in the news, we can invite our learning community, and partners in education, to apply critical thinking to information shared, and take time to fact-check the information they see.

The presence of MDM within our learning communities causes harm and fosters distrust. We are grateful for the community’s support to shut down harmful rhetoric that impacts the working relationships in our system. We are colleagues who courteously work alongside each other to foster safe, welcoming, caring, and respectful learning environments for all.

Throughout this time, please remember that the Division has the safety of students in mind for every decision and is operating as effectively as possible with its current resources. Providing safe, caring, welcoming, and respectful learning environments is the priority. We invite you to consider communication that is respectful, collaborative, and solution focussed.

For wonders and concerns, please follow our concerns resolution process.
